The magical city of Siena lies in the very heart of Tuscany and her beauty and charm have captivated visitors for centuries. Surrounded by olive groves and the vineyards of Chianti, Siena is one of the most beautiful places in all of Italy. Here you will find world class art, stunning medieval architecture and first class cuisine at your finger tips. The center of Sienese life is the Piazza del Campo where just about everyone takes an evening stroll. It is also the setting for the spectacular Palio horse race which is held every July 2nd and August 16th.

 About Siena

A wonderful city that is the home of some of the most precious medieval art and architectural treasures. Siena offers a never-ending number of cultural sights and interests for travelers: the unique “Palio” and wine tasting in the old wine bars, romantic walks along the narrow alleys and excursions outside the city in the Siena Chianti area and in Val’Orcia.

Siena is situated 322 mt above the sea level, in the heart of Tuscany. It has kept its typical medieval appearance untouched, with narrow alleys and noble palaces, surrounded by a beautiful hill landscape.

Siena is an ancient medieval town, that was born on three hills and was enclosed by walls. Still today, it welcomes its visitors with this motto, written on the Camollia Door: “Cor Magi tibi Seni pandit” (Siena opens its heart to you, even more than its door).

The undisputed symbol of the town is the tower Torre del Mangia, in the renowed Piazza del Campo, that has been the theatre of the Palio for many centuries.

Reasons to learn Italian in Siena

The city:
  • Population: 60.000.
  • Events: io di Siena, International Short Film Festival, The oil and wine week, Ferie delle Messi in San Gimignano...
  • La dolce vita: Siena is a city full of fun and life, full of fascinating places to be discovered and to spend pleasant evening with your friends, surrounded by an atmosphere that is both attractive and mysterious.

Start in the central Il Campo square and you can't go far wrong.
The nine sectors of the square represent the middle class Council of Nine that originally laid it out in the 14th century. They were also responsible for the adjacent Palazzo Publico, containing a magnificent set of frescoes, and the Gothic cathedral with its panelled, marble floor.

But there are two days each year when you can't relax over your espresso in Il Campo - these are the days of Il Palio festival, when a wild bareback horse race hurtles through the square, encouraging fierce local rivalry.
