According to the definition, an article is a word used to signal nouns and to specify their application.

Forms: In Italian language, demonstrative, indefinite and definite articles vary according the noun’s:

 

  • Gender
  • Number
  • Initial sound

 

The Definite Article: This is the article that allows one to objects, signal persons, etc in a specific way.

 

Before masculine Nouns Singular Plural
Beginning with any vowel l’ gli
Beginning with z or s + consonant lo
Beginning with any other consonant Il i
Before feminine Nouns Singular Plural
Beginning with any vowel l’ le
Beginning with any consonant la

 

Examples:

 

  • lo student (the student)-->gli student (the students)
  • l’amico (the friend)-->gli amici (the friends)
  • la madre (the mother)-->le madri (the mothers)
  • l’uscita (the extit)-->le uscite (the exists)

 

The indefinite Article: This is the article that allows one designate nonspecific persons or objects.

Beginning with any other sound un

Beginning with any vowel un’
