Munich transport

Although Munich is small and it is possible to explore and visit many of its attractions on foot, it has a well developed and extensive public transport system, like most of European cities. There are many methods of transportation in the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV): the national railroad (Deutsche Bahn or DB) or S-Bahn, the U-Bahn (subway), tram and bus. It is also easy to hire both taxis and cars.
A ticket is needed for accessing both S-Bahn and U-Bahn and it is important to always carry it, because there is a hard control and the train police will demand that you buy a 40 EUR on board ticket or pay a fine. On the MVV’s website (www.mvv-muenchen.de) you can find the appropriate ticket for your traveling needs.
Munich International Airport
Located 29km northeast of the city centre, it is the Germany’s second largest airport, after Frankfurt, and it is the major route into Germany; it is used by a large number of German, European and international airlines. The Munich International Airport has excellent customer facilities that include cash machines, banks, restaurants, bars, cafes, fast food outlets and 24-hour medical emergency centre. Additionally, there are operating many car rental companies.
Subways and rapid transit lines
The Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV) is the Munich’s local passenger transport network and provides a easy way for reaching the city center and a number of destinations around like Oktoberfest, Theresienwiese, Goetheplatz and Hackerbrücke.
The Munich U-Bahn
The U-Bahn system is a metro/subway system, an electric railway public transport network. Operated by the Munich Transport Company (MVG) it is integrated in the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV) and it is interconnected with the S-bahn system.

The Munich S-Bahn
The S-Bahn trains are operated by a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn Regio Bavaria and it is integrated with the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV). Its operation started on 28 May 1972. The system was created by connecting the suburban rail services from the west of the city with those to the east as a means of upgrading transportation in Munich as part of the scheme to provide an adequate transportation system during the Olympics of 1972.
