Miami Museums


Museum and Art Galleries has prospered in the last years in Miami. The city hosts science and nature, history and children museums as well as a variety of art galleries. Take your time to view some of museums and galleries and decide on the best alternative for your next visit to Miami.
Miami Museum of Science

The Museum of Science has more than 140 hands on exhibits which explore universe mysteries. In addition to robotic dinosaurs and manufactured displays, live demonstration and collections of rare natural history specimen, provide informative fun, and often involve audience participation. So the Wildlife Centre has more than 175 live reptiles and birds of preys; the adjacent Space Transit Planetarium projects astronomy and laser shows; and the recognized Falcon Batchelor Bird of Prey Centre, which teaches about this aggressive but lovable animal.
Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art opened in 1996, known as “MOCA” and was designed by the architect, Charles Gwathmey. The goal of museum is to make contemporary art accessible to everyone by exploring how art relates to our culture today.
The collection has grown as well as numerous special exhibits. Some donations include the Janet and Robert Liebowitz Acquisition Edowment and the Gucci Young Artist Acquisition Fund.
But MOCA does not just display art. It gets also that community actively involved in it through programs for adults and juniors, therefore in the process learn about art, history and how an exhibit is put together, as well as training in public speaking.
The museum also presents a variety of special events, including lectures and discussions, jazz performances, classical concerts and film screenings.
The Wolfsonian Museum

The museum was formed by the Wolfsonian Foundation and it is located in the trendy South Beach area. It is a unique decorative art museum and contains thousands of art and artefacts reflecting the cultural forces that shaped western civilisation from the Victorian era through the first half of 20th century.
The museum has Mitchel Wolfson Jr collection, more than 50,000 examples of political, decorative and design arts in media, ranging from furniture and architectural fragments to rare books and ephemera.
Miami Children Museum

The Miami Children Museum was founded in 1983. It includes 12 galleries classrooms and an auditorium. It also features over 15 exhibits from “Television Studio” where children get to explore how television shows operate to “Exploring the Everglades” or investigating the mysteries of the deep; learning healthy nutrition and exercise habits as well as managing their own money and those are just a few of the many thrills. Most of the exhibit are bilingual (English-Spanish) and almost them are interactive. There is no question, the Children Museum in Miami is a great way for them to learn while they have a lot of fun and the museum must be an important attraction for any family in the Miami area.
Bass Museum of Art

The Bass Museum of Art is recognized on the National Register of Historic places and exhibits the visual arts. In 1963, John and Johanna Bass donated their extensive art collection.
Formal gardens add to the museum’s landscaping, an appeal. Outdoor exhibitions spaces add to the structure’s charm as well. But the structure was redesigned in an expansion project, it started in 1998 and completed in 2002. Works included ranged in style from Renaissance and Baroque painting, photography, Japanese woodblock prints, Korean objects, and sculptures from Latin America as well as the Caribbean.
The building where the museum is located was the first public place in Miami where people could go to view works of art. But that is not all they offer, The Bass Museum of Art is home to lectures, films, music and dance performances and educational programs. The museum is open every day except for Mondays and holidays, and offers guided tours.
Gold Coast Railroad Museum

The museum is dedicated to preserving, exhibiting and operating historic rail equipment, featuring more than 40 pieces of railroad rolling stock and equipment including diesel and steam locomotives. Its collections includes the Ferdinand Magellan, the private railroad car built for President Franklin Roosevelt; the Florida East Coast Railway locomotive 153, the engine that pulled the rescue train out of Marathon after the 1935 hurricane; and the 113, an FEC locomotive built in 1913 and used in regular revenue service over the entire Florida East Coast railroad.
The Gold Coast Railroad Museum is an organization that promotes historical trains and railroads also features over 30 historic trains including classic railroad cars as the “Silver Crescent” and engines as the “113”. There is no question the museum is a great way to spend a day.
Lowe Art Museum

The Lowe Art Museum is the unique which owns a distinguished collection of Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities. Its 10,000 object collection is one of the most important in the southeast, with strengths in Renaissance and Baroque, American and Native American, pre-Columbian and Asian art. With a posterior donation, they bought one of the finest collections of Native American art in 1956. Then, in 1987, the Lowe was designated a “Major Cultural Institution” by Florida state.
