Edinburgh plays host to the world’s biggest arts festival every year. During its festival, Edinburgh has been described as “the cultural hub of the world”. No other city in the world can compete with Edinburgh when it comes to being festive. There are no less than 15 festivals taking place in Edinburgh every year. Actually the Edinburgh Festival is a collection of different festivals, from the end of July through to the beginning of September.


Edinburgh International Festival

The International Festival has always been the official, first major event in Edinburgh, showcasing classical and contemporary drama, opera, theatre, dance and music performed in the larger venues. It ends with an open air concert and spectacular fireworks display in Princes Street Gardens.


Edinburgh International Film Festival



The Film Festival is the longest running film festival in the world. It is the most important film festival in United Kingdom with screenings of many brilliant new movies long before they reach London and the rest of the country. Also is a great place to rub shoulders with some big names.


Edinburgh Military Tattoo



Another major event in Edinburgh with a history spanning over 50 years, the Tattoo is at the moment the most popular show in Scotland’s capital.


These 3 are the longest running festivals in Edinburgh, but the list doesn't stop here. Other established events taking place in Scotland's capital are:


Beltane



A wild party held on Calton Hill from 22:00 till dawn incorporates various ancient seasonal and fertility rites, including the passing of winter into spring.


Folk Festival



A massive event at early April, the annual Edinburgh Folk Festival since 1983 is an event which hosts all the major Celtic music bands.


Science Festival



The Science Festival contains exhibitions, workshops, lectures and various hands-on events for adults and children alike.


Scottish International Children’s Festival



The largest performing arts festival of United Kingdom for children, held at the end of May.


Caledonian Beer Festival



Held at Edinburgh’s own Caledonian Brewery on Slateford Road around the first week of the month, the event features dozens of real ales, food and live music mostly jazz in the Brewery’s Festival Hall.


International Jazz and Blues Festival



The Festival features some of the world’s leading performers, as well as many lesser known ones. There’s also the free jazz on summer’s Day in Princess Street Gardens and Mardi Gras in the Grassmarket.

The International Book Festival in Charlotte Square hosts the marquees full of some of the biggest names of literature, discussions, interviews and a whole range of workshops for adults and children.


Hogmanay



The millennium party was described as the best on earth and Edinburgh’s New Year celebration continues to be one of the world’s best festivals. It starts with a torch lit procession through the city centre followed by four days of various events, including pop and rock concerts. The highlight is the giant street party on the 31st.
