Sliema is a town located on the northeast coast of Malta, together to the coastline up to neighboring St. Julian’s constitutes main coastal resort. The city is a center for shopping, restaurant and café life. Once, the island was the home of Malta’s aristocracy, and now it still is preferred by the upper echelons of society.

Sliema is the major commercial and residential area, which provides a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of Valletta and the noise and bright lights of St Julian's. Tower road is a fashionable district with its 5 kilometers promenade, full of shops, restaurants, banks supermarkets, internet cafes, and day cruise boats. Other main shopping streets are Bisazza Street and The Strand, contain more than 600 shopping outlets packed with the latest designer clothes just waiting for the unsuspecting visitors to stroll passed.
Sliema is divided into four distinct parishes – each with its parish church – Stella Maris, the Sacred Heart, St Gregory and Jesus of Nazareth. In Fact the name of the city coming of Sliem Ghalik Marija, which means Hail Mary, and the first word "Sliem" means “peace”, but all this began from the name of a chapel dedicated to The Virgin Mary, which was under the title of Start of the Sea. Sliema once was a fishing town and the chapel served as a beacon and reference to the few fishermen who lived in that area.
Hotels of all categories abound, particularly at Paceville, where a high-class Casino, amusement halls, discotheques and nigh-spots provide entertainment for the thousands of youths and foreign visitors who frequent the locality. Since Valleta with its historic attraction and corporate importance is also close the area is considered to be most central on the island.
The city growth quickly with the tourist and the business, around 1800’s, Sliema only was a small town, and 50 year later, British became the area in a great commercial and resort city. Around 1950’s the residential areas of the city extended to the north, and the tourist potential began.
