In the invention of modern football, Cambridge played a unique role as the game’s first set of rules were drawn up by members of the university in 1848. The Cambridge Rules were first played in Parker’s Piece and had a defining influence on Football Association rules in 1863.
The most successful sports team of Cambridge over recent years is Rubgy Union Club. The club’s home ground is at West Renault Park in the south west corner of the city.
Cambridge United F.C played in the Football League at the Abbey Stadium. Cambridge is also known for its university sporting events against Oxford, especially the rugby union Varsity Match and the Boat Race. These are followed by people across the globe. The Cambridge Dampers Club (punting) used to take part in the Scottish Boat Race, winning the event on a number of occasions.
Punting in Cambridge

A punt is a narrow flat-bottomed boat that somewhat resembles a Venetian gondola with the curve removed. Generally punts seat up to four adults while a fifth person stands at the rear and propels the boat with a long pole.
The design was developed in the medieval period to allow for easy navigation in areas with shallow water. Until recently punts were used by commercial fishermen working the fens of East Anglia, but today they are almost exclusively used for recreation.
Punting along the River Cam is one of the traditional delights of visiting Cambridge, and something that should be tried - at least once - by everyone! Punts can be hired at Silver Street bridge, Mill Lane, Magdalene Bridge, Jesus Green , Trinity College, or Grantchester. It is looks effortless and easy, is a relaxing way to enjoy a quiet summer afternoon.
